standard chess game

moves of the pieces

king 1 square in any direction
queen along any diagonal or straight line
pawn 1 square forward, 1 or 2 squares forward on the first move of that pawn
night 1 move along a diagonal and 2 squares along a straight line, or 2 squares along a straight line and then one move along a diagonal
rook along any straight line
bishop along any diagonal

taking other pieces

standard piece, move to the position of an opposite piece, the opponent's piece is removed from the board

pawn, move one square forward along a diagonal, the opponent's piece is removed from the board

object of the game

if the opponent's king is under attack, i.e. a piece could move to the square that it is on, a situation of 'check' exists

if under check, the player must move the king or move another peice to block the line of attack

if unable to make any such move, the position is 'checkmate' and the game is over

other moves

if a pawn piece reaches the other side of the playing board, it becomes a queen piece

if the king and a rook have not yet moved, and the squares between them are vacant, they may make a 'castle' move, with involves switching their locations to the squares along side where the other piece was previously [king side], next to the queen's location [queen side]

the white side makes the first move

night [horse]
rook [castle]
bishop [tall piece]

2.

the standard game is played on a board 8x8 squares in size with the squares alternating between black and white.

the pieces are eight pawns, located initially on the second back row.

the back row is initially, from the outside in, rook, night, bishop, king and queen.

the queen is located on the left side of the king when viewed from the player's location.

the game continues with alternating moves by each player until checkmate is achieved, or a situation develops where it is impossible for either side to checkmate the other (e.g. extreme case of only two kings remaining on the board)

a side may also resign
